NEWSGROUP JARGON (unfamiliar words)

Like all other things computer-ish newsgroup have their own language for describing things. Here’s a quick rundown of the more common buzzwords:
Each message in a newsgroup is officially called an article or a post though just about everyone refers to them as message because, in a sense, they are like a normal e-mail message, because in a sense, they are like normal e-mail message.

A series of article on same subject is called thread.

Many newsgroups are moderated by volunteers who weed out posted message that are irrelevant to the group or that are just plain obnoxious. Most newsgroups however are unmoderated, which means anything goes.

Lurking is hanging around a group to see what’s being discussed. But unlike lurking around public parks at night which is generally not good and frowned upon by decent folk, lurking in a newsgroup is ok, particularly if you are new to the group. It gives you a chance to get a feel for the group and a better idea of what’s acceptable when you finally do post your first message.

Spamming is posting articles that are really advertisements. Don’t do it or you are likely to get flamed.

Flaming is sending nasty message to people in the group in relation for a real perceived affront. Sometimes it might seem that a flame is exactly what’s needed, but the passive approach typically wins in the end as the intended flame gets continually ignored and eventually drifts out to bother another group.

A poster, in newsgroup argot isn't something that hang on a wall. It’s a person who post article to the group.

The group charter (although someone that would chart lists ) is, in this sense, the generally accepted underlying theme and rule set for the group for the group.
